Karl Höfner (1864–1955) founded one of Germany's most respected stringed-instrument companies, whose basses and archtops shaped jazz, pop, and rock history.

Born in Bohemia, Höfner trained as a violin maker before establishing Karl Höfner GmbH in Schönbach (later part of the Czech-German lutherie tradition). The firm gained renown for meticulous craftsmanship on violins, cellos, and archtop guitars exported across Europe.

In the 1950s Höfner's 500/1 violin-shaped bass became world famous when Paul McCartney adopted it with The Beatles — the «Cavern bass» image is inseparable from the instrument's warm, round tone and lightweight body. Höfner also produced President and Committee archtops favored by jazz guitarists.

Though Karl Höfner died in 1955, the company continues under family ownership, maintaining hand-built traditions while updating models for modern players. For bassists and collectors, Höfner remains synonymous with elegant German lutherie.
