The Quasimidi Raven is a specialized dance/techno music production synthesizer that takes the German manufacturer's approach of instant music creation to new heights. Following in the footsteps of the Quasar and Technox modules, the Raven combines synthesizer capabilities with integrated sequencing and arranging features, positioning itself as a one-stop solution for electronic dance music production.
Design and Build Quality
The Raven features a distinctive chunky design with all-metal blue paneling complemented by retro wood-veneer end cheeks. The front panel includes a practical recessed area for storing disks and accessories. While the overall build quality is solid, some concerns remain from previous Quasimidi models, including weak LCD overlay adhesive and protruding control knobs that may be vulnerable during transport or gigging.
The unit houses a 2x40 character backlit LCD display positioned above four software-controlled knobs, with navigation facilitated by a large Page Wheel for fast scrolling through operating pages. The control surface employs red and white color coding to differentiate between Performance and Sequencer modes, enhancing operational clarity.
Sound Architecture and Quality
At its core, the Raven utilizes MASS (Multi Algorithm Sound Synthesis) technology, delivering 21-voice polyphony across 16 multitimbral parts. The sound library comprises 512 individual sounds organized into logical Sound Groups (Basses, SynLead, Organ, etc.) with alphabetical ordering for quick selection. The 200 ROM Performances can be supplemented by 50 user-programmable RAM locations.
The sound quality is exceptional, particularly noted for its unnervingly full bass response that rivals analog synthesizers. The sample ROM includes authentic recreations of classic dance music staples: fat Minimoog basses, squelchy TB-303 bleeps, and iconic drum sounds from Roland's TR-606/808/909 series, plus CR-78 drum machine sounds. The piano samples show significant improvement over earlier Quasimidi offerings.
Performance Mode
Performance mode utilizes up to four synthesizer Parts combined with two effects processors (FX1 and FX2) to create complex, layered sounds. Parts can be split, layered, or velocity-split depending on the selected key mode. Sound editing employs an offset system where users modify preset parameters by entering positive or negative offset values rather than direct parameter editing.
The dual effects system provides comprehensive processing: FX1 handles reverb and delay treatments (room, chamber, plate, hall, plus gated and early reflection patterns), while FX2 manages modulation effects including chorus, phasing, flanging, and delay. The effects can operate in series or parallel configuration, with FX2's phasing implementation being particularly noteworthy.
The Motivator (Advanced Arpeggiator)
The Raven's "Motivator" represents an evolution of traditional arpeggiators, offering extensive control over speed, timing resolution, gate time, direction, octave range, note sorting, repetition, loop length, and hold modes. Real-time modulation capabilities allow dynamic alteration of note velocity and gate length. Uniquely, the Motivator can produce chord rhythms and gating patterns instead of individual note arpeggiation.
Sequencing and Song Construction
The Raven's internal sequencer operates through a unique pattern-based system using eight tracks. Ten songs can be stored internally, each containing up to 10 basic patterns. Pattern creation follows an intuitive "groove generation" approach: users select from 400 preset motifs across eight track types (kick, snare, hi-hat, percussion, bass, sequence 1, sequence 2, and chord).
Real-time performance controls include track muting via the lowest keyboard octave, transposition using the next octave up, and various numeric key functions. The "Mute B" mode enables dynamic track punching, allowing users to break up riffs and add sections on-the-fly during live performance.
Song Arrangement and Automation
Complete song arrangements can be constructed using up to 99 steps, each defining pattern selection, track muting, bar count, and transposition. The built-in "Create Song" function can automatically generate complete arrangements based on user-created patterns, producing surprisingly usable results with a somewhat formulaic but effective approach.
Connectivity and Interface
The rear panel provides standard MIDI In/Out/Thru connections, left/right audio outputs, headphone output, and programmable footswitch input. Notably absent is a control pedal input, which would benefit the extensive modulation capabilities. The unit includes dual modulation wheels alongside the standard pitch wheel.
Limitations and Considerations
The Raven's approach is deliberately focused on four-on-the-floor dance music production. The internal sequencer doesn't support manual recording of played material, relying instead on motif selection and arrangement. Song data cannot be exported to external devices, and without an onboard disk drive, users are limited to the 10 internal song storage locations.
The original manual suffered from poor translation quality, though distributors indicated improved documentation would become available.
Target Market and Applications
The Raven excels as a specialized tool for DJs, electronic music producers, and anyone requiring quick, professional-sounding dance tracks without extensive programming knowledge. Its strength lies in rapid music creation using high-quality preset motifs and patterns, making it ideal for live performance situations where instant results are paramount.
While purists may view the motif-based approach as "music-by-numbers," the Raven delivers polished, club-ready productions with minimal effort. For users seeking creative control over every musical element, traditional sequencing approaches may be more appropriate. However, for its intended purpose of instant dance music generation, the Raven offers unparalleled efficiency and quality.
