The Casio HT-3000 is a 61-key, 8-voice digital synthesizer released in 1987 as part of Casio’s HT and HZ series. It is notable for its Spectrum Dynamic (SD) Synthesis, a unique form of sound generation that blends elements of subtractive synthesis with digitally generated waveforms. The HT-3000 is designed for both live performance and sound design, offering a range of features including tone editing, MIDI compatibility, auto-rhythm, chord/operation memory, and pattern memory.

Sound Generation & Synthesis

  • SD Synthesis: The HT-3000 uses 32 digitally generated waveforms, some of which are harmonically rich and include pulse waves, ring modulation, and noise. These waveforms are processed through an analog VCF (low-pass filter) and DCA (amplifier), both with ADSR envelopes.
  • LFO: The LFO modulates pitch (vibrato) and volume (tremolo), with 5 waveform options (random, sawtooth up/down, square, triangle).
  • Filter: The analog filter (NJM2090 IC) is resonant and has a 24dB/octave slope, adding warmth and character to the sound.
  • Chorus Effect: A built-in stereo chorus enhances the sound palette.

Performance Features

  • Auto-Accompaniment: The Casio Chord function allows for one-finger or fingered chord accompaniment, with auto-harmonize for melodic harmonization.
  • Auto-Rhythm: 20 preset rhythms (expandable via RAM card) with fill-ins, endings, and tempo control.
  • Pattern Memory: Users can program 10 two-bar patterns and 10 one-bar fill-ins for bass, rhythm, and chords.
  • Chord/Operation Memory: Stores up to 640 chords and 198 operations per song, allowing for complex accompaniment sequences.

Connectivity & Expansion

  • MIDI: The HT-3000 supports MIDI IN/OUT/THRU, with 4 MIDI modes (A, B, C, D) for different performance setups.
  • RAM Card Slot: Optional RA-100 RAM card expands memory for tones, rhythms, and patterns.
  • Audio Outputs: Stereo line out, headphone jack, and built-in speakers for standalone use.

Programming & Usability

  • Editing: Parameters are edited using a rotary dial and two-digit codes (e.g., "10" for cutoff frequency). While powerful, the interface is less intuitive without the manual.
  • Presets: 20 preset tones for upper and lower sections, with 20 editable internal tones and 20 additional tones via RAM card.

Design & Build

  • Physical: Full-size 61-key keyboard, pitch bend/modulation wheels, and volume sliders.
  • Power: Operates on 6 D-cell batteries or an AC adapter (AD-5).
